St. Paul Schools Closed Today: No Practice
There will be no Nordic ski practice today as a result of the school closings. Tomorrow's classic meet at Elm Creek is on. Today would be a great day to wax your skis!

Tuesday Meet Cancelled Due to Rain
There will be no meet this Tuesday, as Elm Creek will not be open to teams and meets due to the rain and poor trail conditions. We will have practice at 2:30 at school.
Today's practice will also be at the school, a change from the planned Como Golf Course practice. Looks like rain will be turning to snow at some point this evening, hopefully sooner rather than later!

SNOW!
Nordic ski practice begins Monday after school, and it appears that for the first time in my 6 years of ski coaching, there will be some snow on the first day of practice! This is encouraging, even if the snow is slushy and melting away.
Skiers who have their own equipment should bring it tomorrow. We will do some demonstrations and basic technique work on the soccer fields at school. If you have rock skis, those would be the best choice. Otherwise, we can bring out some school skis for those who bring their boots.
We have a slightly larger ski room to work with this year, so we'll be working on getting that set up tomorrow as well.
Those who need equipment, we will attempt to get that issued as early as possible. You will need to have all of your paperwork taken care of before equipment will be issued.
Saturday is the MYSL ski swap. Info is available HERE.
FINAL NOTE: The Parent's Meeting will be held Thursday this week at 5:30 p.m. at school. This change is due to a change in the time of the school board recognition night for the boys XC team, which Coach Chris and several of the skiers will be attending.

Section Meet Results
The Como Park XC team wrapped up the season Wednesday, October 27 with the Section 4AA Meet, held at the Les Bolstad Golf Course on the University of Minnesota campus. The boys placed 9th, and the girls 14th. Top finishers were Nate Rue (19th, 16:59) and Sophie Nielsen (76th, 18:33). The teams capped a successful season with a very positive race. There were lots of smiles and hard efforts on a cold, windy day.
The end of season banquet is slated for Monday, Nov. 8 at 6:00 p.m. at the Como Park Senior High cafeteria.

Conference Champs!
The Como Park cross country team made history today with its first Conference Championship ever! The boys captured the team title with a great team effort, placing 2nd (Nate Rue), 4th (Abdisalan Hassan), 6th (Chris Hutton), 7th (Evan Hanson), and 10th (Marshal Landrum).
All five guys captured All-Conference honors, as did junior Sophie Nielsen, who placed 15th in the girls varsity race.
While the top five boys were certainly Como's stars of the show today, the entire team contributed to this effort. The pressure placed on the top guys by the 6, 7, 8, 9 runners made the difference. The extraordinary positive energy of the girls team made the difference. And the many Como Park runners who preceded this team definitely made the difference.
Thinking back to my first days of coaching at Como, I remember getting on the bus to go to a meet and having 2 runners show up that day -- one boy and one girl. The willingness of those runners to stick with it, and make the team better made the difference.
All the alums out there who put their time and energy into the program, who could be counted on to show up every day, to work harder than others had worked before them, and to push themselves to be better athletes, to make our team a better team...to all the runners who held themselves to a higher standard and set an example for their teammates...this is your victory as well. Thanks!

Pike Island Meet Cancelled
The Pike Island Challenge has been cancelled due to flooding. There will be no meet this week. The next meet is Conference.
The Conference Meet will be held at Highland Park Golf Course in St. Paul, on Tuesday, October 19.
The boys run two 2.5k loops for their 5k race:

2010 Season Coming Soon
The Como Park cross country team has developed a strong tradition of practicing consistently, competing hard, and having fun. We welcome runners and of all abilities, and strive to improve together. If you are interested in running on the team this fall, read on!
Official practice begins Monday, August 16, at 4:30 p.m. at the front doors of the high school. Student-athletes must register for cross country the week before practice begins (August 9—13) in the athletic office at the high school (740 Rose Avenue W). Registration times are Mon—Wed 10:00 AM—3:00 PM, Thu 4:00—7:00 PM, and Fri 8:00—11:00 AM. Call 651-293-6665 for more information.
You and your parents will need to complete and sign some forms, and pay your $45 fee ($20 for those on free or reduced lunch). You also need to have an up-to-date physical (within the last 3 years) on file with the athletic department. It’s very important that you take care of these things, as you will not be able to practice before you do.
I have enclosed a practice schedule for the first three weeks of the season. Please plan to attend practice every day – we have a lot to accomplish prior to the start of school. Note that the normal practice time prior to the start of school is 4:30 p.m. Once the school year begins, practice will begin at 2:30 p.m. as usual, with optional Saturday practices hosted by team members at 9:00 a.m.

Summer...Time to Get Fit
Summer is well under way...we're about half-way between the last day of school and the first day of cross country practice. Hopefully many of the Como Park Endurance community have been working hard and laying the foundation for a great year ahead. There's still time to get in some great base work before school begins.
A reminder about summer captain's practice, which is specifically for the cross country team but is open to anyone...skiers, soccer players and other folks just looking to have some company while the get fit. Come out and work towards the goals you have for the year ahead.

Section Meet Success!
The Como Park Nordic ski teams finished out the season with excellent finishes at the Section 3 Meet at St. Paul's Battle Creek Park. Both teams placed 4th out of 13 teams, the strongest combined showing in the program's history.
The girls, coming off a 3rd place finish at last year's meet, cemented their reputation as a team to be reckoned with in the section. The top 4 finished 9-18-20-25. The senior class of Leah Roth, Mara Chin-Purcell, and Jane Kramer stepped forward and finished their Como Park ski careers with strong performances. Next year's team faces a rebuilding challenge, but returns team leader Rachel Lee, as well as Mabel Smebakken, Michaela Leimberer, Kate Wackett, Virginia Godfrey, Leah Bromaghim, Kaila Will, Sophie Nielsen and others.
Individually, Leah Roth rode a strong classic race to the state meet. She took 6th in the classic race and held on for 9th in the pursuit. She will compete at the state meet at Giant's Ridge on Thursday, Feb. 11. The girls skate race begins at 11:00 a.m. and the classic pursuit follows in the afternoon.
The boys narrowly defeated St. Paul Academy and Highland Park to capture 4th place. Last year's boys team placed 7th, which was the best they had ever finished. Adding to the excitement is the fact that the entire top 10 boys is composed of juniors and sophomores. Jon Tetlie led the charge, taking 18th place overall. He was followed by Nate Rue (24th), Erik Sateren (26th), and Matt Buechler (38th). The team has benefitted from their depth, with each skier pushing the individual ahead of him to work harder. If they are able to take that energy through the off-season and summer training, the team has an opportunity to move to the next level.

Conference Meet Results
The Como Park Nordic ski team competed Friday at the Twin Cities Nordic Conference Meet. The girls took 5th place and the boys took 6th out of 11 conference schools.
The girls team, while not completely satisfied with their finish, competed admirably on a day when things just didn't fall into place. Still, they were just 6 points out of 3rd place. They look to bounce back for a better day on Tuesday's Section 3 Meet.
The boys team displayed remarkable depth, with the 10th place skier on the team taking 67th place in a field of 100. The tightly packed group of juniors and seniors has the potential to take a big step forward next year.

Saturday, January 23rd, practice will be at Como Golf Course instead of Baker Park. The change is due to potentially hazardous driving conditions. Varsity skiers should plan to classic ski for 10k and then skate ski for 10k. JV skiers will skate.

Giant's Ridge/Mesabi East Invitational Results
The Como Park Nordic team claimed strong finishes in all four of the divisions at the Giant's Ridge Invitational. Both the boys and girls JV teams placed around 40th, despite being one skier short of a full scoring team.
The varsity teams shined, with the girls capturing 33rd and the boys taking 50th place of around 80 teams. Rachel Lee came in as the top Como finisher of the day in 48th position on the extremely challenging freestyle course. Leah Roth took 55th in the girls classic race.
Jon Tetlie and Nate Rue led the way for the boys, placing 83rd and 109th respectively in the classic and freestyle races. The most notable aspect of the boys performance, however, was the strong depth shown by the junior and sophomore classes. The varsity teams shined, with the girls capturing 33rd and the boys taking 50th place of around 80 teams. Rachel Lee came in as the top Como finisher of the day in 48th position on the extremely challenging freestyle course. Leah Roth took 55th in the girls classic race.
Jon Tetlie and Nate Rue led the way for the boys, placing 83rd and 109th respectively in the classic and freestyle races. The most notable aspect of the boys performance, however, was the strong depth shown by the junior and sophomore classes. Classic on Monday
Skiers should plan to classic ski on Monday in preparation for Tuesday's 5k classic race, to be held on the chalet side trails at Theodore Wirth Park.
